Mobile Tuesday Staggers Out of the Gate
December 2nd, 2008 by Matt ThomsonLet’s hope the aroma of coffee from the West Coast can wake up Mobile Tuesday because we’re still sleepwalking through it here in sunny Boston. Yesterday, I wrote about the potential - and potentially bad timing - of Mobile Tuesday. We definitely need a push for mobile marketing, but is this really the push we needed? Let’s take a look at the Mobile Tuesday problems at the present hour of 10:50 AM EST on this December the 2nd.
- The immediate butt of jokes. Quickly ripped apart in Good Morning Silicon Valley by blogger John Murrell’s gently scathing account: Retailers announce plan to rename every day in December. Recounting many of the things I said yesterday - bad year to do this, maybe even a bad day to do this - Murrell gets to the heart of the matter, asking readers to name the remaining days. One reader sardonically asks whether or not “Family Time Sunday” is coming soon?
- An absolutely abysmal web presence. Is this really the Mobile Tuesday site? No way. No. Way. I wouldn’t believe it but Mobile Marketing Watch says it’s true by referring to it in their article “Mobile Tuesday” Marketing Campaign Goes Forward. I just double-checked. Again. Still can’t believe it so I’m just going to go out on a limb and say this is a mistake; that’s not the right site and someone’s going to be getting some unmerited web traffic today. Some telecommunications company in Malaysia. Which begs the question: Where is the real Mobile Tuesday site? There is no mention of it on Mobigosee, the apparent endorser of the campaign. Are they already washing their hands of the matter?
- The idea that it’s already a failure based on the many retailers who have pulled out of the campaign. Just check the headline of that Mobile Marketing Watch story, insinuating that the campaign is trudging ahead by noting that the campaign is “going forward.”
Ugh. I was actually waiting to see if this would be a train wreck and the cars are clearly veering off the rails. Too bad.

Mobile Tuesday is actually pretty cool. I took advantage of a coupon I received based on my preferences, gave me a great deal on a gift for my wife. It really is a unique shopping tool, try it at http://www.aboutmobiletuesday.mob sign up at http://www.mobiletuesdays.com.
